Pay What You Wish Change

I am making a change and asking you to pay something for the pattern. I understand that budgets are tight and part of spirit of  the weave-alongs is to open  the  doors wide and  invite  weavers to  join us. In thinking about pattern writing in general, I don’t want to  devalue the process not just  on my behalf, but the value of a good pattern in general.

The second reason I’m asking  you to pay something is I want you to have some stake in the game. This doesn’t mean I expect you to weave the thing every time, but I do encourage you to watch along even if you aren’t ready or circumstances don’t enable you to weave the thing until a later date. This is not a place to grab a  free pattern and stash it away. I’m not  trying to create clickbate, but a meaningful experience that will further your weaving life. Weaving is not an inexpensive endeavor and this is why I gravitated to the rigid-heddle loom. It makes weaving accessible to so many different lifestyles.

The fancier this space gets, it can look like it is more than a weaving teacher with a computer and a camera who likes to write. I love making weavers and I can do this because of the incredible support of rigid-heddle weavers.

Heddles Up!

About This Weave-Along

Super Supporters and True Believer members get a vote in what we weave next and they chose Color-and-Weave Lace! Woven lace is one part structure, one part sett, and one part materials. Add into this mix the optical illusions of color-and-weave and you have a heady mixture. This cloth only requires one heddle and two pick-up sticks—no heddle rods or recharging required! The clever placement of the sticks means you can place two pick-up sticks at the same time and leave them in place throughout the weaving process. Our next weave-along will tackle this intriguing mix for a light four-season scarf that offers so many possibilities.

Weave-Along Details

Who:

Most weave-alongs (WAL) are geared towards adventurous weavers who want to learn a new technique. I hesitate to put an experience level on the WAL, because you don’t know what you can do until you try. That said, I know the overwhelm that comes with learning something new, so we break it down step-by-step. This weave-along only requires a single heddle and a couple of pick-up sticks. If you have a basic understanding of direct warping and weaving vocabulary you should feel comfortable diving in.

What

Color-and-Weave Lace Scarf measuring 60” by 7½” with a 6” twisted fringe.

Tools
Rigid-heddle loom with at least a 12″ weaving width; 10-dent heddle; 2-3 shuttles; pick-up stick at least 12″ long, tapestry needle. Optional: ⅛” metal rod at least 12″ long

Yarn
Sport weight yarn or similar measuring about 1,500 yd/ lb in two colors. Shown in Gist Mallo (unmercerized slub cotton) in Frost (light) and Fir (dark), 750 yd/8oz cone.

Yardage
240 yd warp (120 light, 120 dark)
225 yd weft (158 light, 67 dark or vice versa—whichever color there is more of will become the dominate color and the other an accent. In the scarf at right, the light is the dominant and the dark is the accent.)
